The Portuguese Football Federation (Federação Portuguesa de Futebol) have this week released a remake of their 1984 football kits. While it is common for national teams and clubs to remake old kits, Portugal’s new 1984 remakes are unusual – they come with Three Stripes, despite Portugal being sponsored by Nike today.
Portugal had been sponsored by Adidas from 1978 until 1994. Since 1997, Portugal have been supplied by Nike, with Puma expected to take over from 2025. The remakes have been produced in-house.
The kits, originally produced by Adidas, have been reproduced without the company’s Trefoil logo but with the iconic Three Stripes.
However, the use of the Three Stripes is generally trademarked by Adidas, which raises concerns over whether Portugal have the right to add them to their remakes. Whether Adidas will take legal action against Portugal’s use of the Three Stripes design remains to be seen.
The Portugal 1984 Remake football kits are available at a very reasonable price of 50 Euros and are produced in Portugal.
Adidas have filed over 90 lawsuits and signed 200+ settlement agreements related to their three-stripe trademark since 2008, according to court documents from a lawsuit against designer Thom Browne’s fashion house.
